About Charles Simonyi
Simonyi Karolyi, often known as Charles Simonyi, is an American software executive of Hungarian descent. He is best known for his involvement in the development of the first versions of Microsoft Office in the 1980s.
Education
His engineering mathematics degree from the University of California, Berkeley was followed by a PhD in computer science from Stanford University.
Early Career
In order to work for the Danish computer business Regnecentralen, Simonyi emigrated from Hungary in 1966.
Simonyi joined Microsoft Corporation in 1981 following employment at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (Xerox PARC). While working for Microsoft, he oversaw the creation of the popular Word and Excel programs.
Intentional Software was started by him after he left Microsoft in 2002. But after selling the business to Microsoft in 2017, he went back to working for the company.
Other Interesting Facts
Simonyi was a space tourist flown into orbit by Space Adventures, Ltd. in 2007. He and two Russian cosmonauts went into orbit from Kazakhstan's Baikonur Cosmodrome aboard Soyuz TMA-10. He left Earth on Soyuz TMA-9 on April 9 to travel to the International Space Station (ISS). Simonyi thus became the second Hungarian to travel to space. He is also the fifth person to travel as a tourist to space.
America’s famous business magazine Forbes estimated that his net worth was in the region of $5 billion, as of 2021.
He has contributedly handsomely to many charity organizations, including to the Charles Simonyi Fund for Arts and Sciences, which he founded in 2004.
Simonyi donated $5 million to support the construction of a building for the University of Washington Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department.
In the lead up to the 2016 US presidential election, he donated to Donald Trump’s campaign. He also supported Trump’s 2020 re-election bid.
Personal Life
Simonyi tied the knot with Lisa Persdotter in 2008. 32 years younger than Simonyi, Persdotter is the daughter of a Swedish businessman.
