About Charley Grapewin
Charles “Charley” Ellsworth Grapewin was an American actor best known for playing Uncle Henry in the 1939 classic “The Wizard of Oz.”
Life and Career
The Xenia, Ohio native left home to join the famous P.T. Barnum circus, where he traveled and worked as a trapeze artist and aerialist. He also starred in the Broadway stage production of “The Wizard of Oz”, foreshadowing his appearance in the film version 36 years later.
Grapewin’s acting career took off when starred in several silent films in the early 1900s, including “Chimmie Hicks at the Races” and “Chimmie Hicks and the Rum Omelet.” Throughout his career, he appeared in over 100 films. Although he is more famous for playing Uncle Henry, he is also known for having a recurring role in the “Ellery Queen” film series as Inspector Queen.
Death
He died of natural causes in California in 1956 and was interred at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Trivia
Grapewin Street, located in Corona, California, is named after him.
He died before seeing the telecast of “The Wizard of Oz”, which took place in November 1956, nine months after he had passed.
Grapewin was a six-time Academy award nominee.
