About Charley Straight
Even as a young vaudeville performer, Charles Theodore Straight devoted himself to his musical calling by playing in bands and writing songs until he established his own band, the Charley Straight Orchestra.
His Life & Career
While attending Wendell Phillips High School, he participated in school musicals and took piano lessons. He was hired by singer and comedian Gene Greene after graduating from high school.
His debut song with Gene was the modestly successful "King of the Bungaloos." After working with Gene for a number of years, he proceeded to work at the Imperial Piano Roll Company in Chicago, where he recorded a number of piano rolls starting in 1916.
As his fame increased, he seized the opportunity and started his own band, the Charley Straight Orchestra. In the 1920s, his band made records for Paramount Records and Brunswick Records while holding a tenure at the Rendezvous Café from 1922 until 1925.
Death
He remained active as the leader of his band even after August 1928, when he stopped recording, until he was killed in Chicago in 1940. The musician was hit by a speeding car. He was 49 years old.
