About Charlie Chaplin
Charlie Chaplin was an English silent film star, comedian, and filmmaker. He was forced to leave the U.S. due to his connections with communism.
Personal
Charlie had a very unconventional upbringing. His parents were married musicians and entertainers but they had an open marriage. They each had children from various other people. In 1898, Charlie’s mother was committed to a mental asylum and was in and out for a few years until she died in the asylum. His father died of alcoholism. He has been described as having the ultimate ‘rags to riches story’.
Highlights
Charlie’s silent film debut was in the 1921 film ‘The Kid’. He went on to star in several other silent films and then with the popularity of sound films in the 1930s his silent film roles started slowing down. Charlie refused to star in sound films. In 1940 he appeared as Adolf Hitler in “The Great Dictator”. It was after this film that an FBI investigation was opened due to communist sympathies. He fled to Switzerland where he appeared in several more silent films over the years. Even with his political views he was still regarded as one of the greatest entertainers in cinema history.
