About Charlie Wilson
He is an American singer, songwriter and producer named Charles Kent Wilson at birth. He helped shape the global musical landscape in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. He is highly recognized for his single “You Are”, which was number 1 on the Billboard Urban Adult Contemporary chart for 13 continuous weeks.
Background & Early Life
Wilson was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Reverend Oscar; a minister of the Church of God in Christ and Lucy Wilson; a pianist and music minister in western Oklahoma for 45 years.
He usually sang in church before his father’s Sunday preaching when he was a young boy. He enrolled at the Dunbar Elementary School and Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa. After, he attended Langston University in Langston, Oklahoma where he became a drum major at the Langston University Marching Pride.
Career
His first solo album, “Bridging the Gap” was released in the 2000s with the help of Michael Paran; the CEO of P Music Group. He signed a multi-album deal with Jive Records in 2004 and released a second album on Jive Records “Uncle Charlie” in 2009. He was also known for his fiery live performances, performing averagely about 50 to 60 concerts a year.
He was also active in big urban festivals around the year including the Cincinnati Music Festival, Hampton Jazz, San Diego Music Festival, Las Vegas Music Festival and the Arizona Jazz Festival. He released his memoir “I am Charlie Wilson” in 2015 which became a New York Times Best Seller and Washington Post Best Seller.
Awards & Achievements
He had 11 Grammy award nominations in various categories as well as 6 NAACP Image Award nominations in different categories. He won 1 NAACP Image Award for “Outstanding Album” for “Love, Charlie”. He was the recipient of BET’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013.
Personal Life & Legacy
He became a major drug addict in the early 1990s and became homeless, sleeping on Hollywood Boulevard Streets. He joined a Los Angeles drug rehabilitation centre to help him get over his addictions. He married Mahin Tat, the centre’s director in 1995.
He began serving as the national spokesperson of the Prostate Cancer Foundation where he encourages black men to get tested for the disease.
Other Facts
The legendary singer is affectionately known by the nickname “Uncle Charlie”. According to sources, he was given the said nickname by his close friend and rapper Snoop Dogg.
Wilson has been recruited by other notable musicians such as Mystikal and Kanye West. He performed on the latter’s 2011 single “All of the Lights”, which also featured stars like Alicia Keys, John Legend, Rihanna, and Elton John.
