About Charlotte Corday
Nicknamed “Angel of Assassination” posthumously, French noblewoman Charlotte Corday made a mark on the French Revolution. She was responsible for the death of Jean-Paul Marat, whom she stabbed with a kitchen knife in his bathtub. The latter was a notorious Jacobin faction member and a journalist who had been using his “L’Ami du peuple” newspaper to fuel radical sentiments during the Revolution. He was also largely responsible for influencing the purge of the Girondins political faction. Corday was known to be a sympathizer of the Girondins.
Family Life
She was born Marie-Anne Charlotte de Corday d'Armont to Jacques Francois de Corday and Charlotte Marie Jacqueline Gaultier de Mesnival, who were cousins from an aristocratic family.
Death
She was executed by the guillotine on July 17, 1793, four days after assassinating Marat.
