The Costa-Rican, Chavela Vargas, was an actress and a singer, recognized for singing Mexican songs. She turned into a professional artist in the 1940s. In 2002, she publicly declared that she was a lesbian. Vargas’s songs include “Con el cuarteto Lara Foster” in 1961, “La Original” in 1973, “Grandes éxitos” in 2002 and “Luna Grande” in 2012.
As an actress, she starred in numerous films including “La flor de mi secreto” and “La Soldadera”.

Her parents were Herminia Lizano and Francisco Vargas. She was diagnosed with poliomyelitis when she was a child. At age 17, she moved to Mexico. She was never married.

Vargas died in 2012 due to respiratory problems.
