About Chester W. Nimitz
Chester Williams Nimitz was instrumental in helping the United States’ Navy achieve its reputation as the largest navy in the world by the end of the Second World War.
The fleet admiral occupied the positions of Commander in Chief, Pacific Ocean Areas and Commander in Chief, US Pacific Fleet during the war.
As a principal expert on submarines, he was responsible for the shift from the use of gasoline to diesel to power them. He also oversaw the building of USS Nautilus, the first nuclear-powered submarine in the world. Following the war, he served as Chief of Naval Operations for two years.
Family Life
His father, Chester Bernhard Nimitz died six months before his mother, Anna Josephine Henke gave birth to him. He had four children with Catherine Vance Freeman, whom he married in 1913.
Achievements
He was honored with the US Navy’s Distinguished Service Medal and the Army Distinguished Service Medal.
Death
He died on 20 February 1966.
