Early Life
Beard played basketball while at McCullough High School in Texas. He graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in kinesiology.
Career
This Texan started his career as an assistant coach for the men’s basketball team at the University of North Texas in 1997. Between 1999 and 2001, he shuttled in three colleges but eventually settled at Texas Tech University as assistant head coach from 2001 to 2011. Beard received the 2015 Lone Star Coach of the Year award while working for the University of Arkansas.
In April 2021, he went back to his alma mater the University of Texas as the 25th head coach and coached the team to their first NCAA tournament win since 2013. However, Beard was suspended after he was arrested in December 2022 for allegedly trying to strangle his fiancée Randi Trew. This resulted in several calls by sports analysts in the United States for Beard to be fired by the University of Texas.
