Smylie enrolled and graduated from Massey High School. While there, he engaged in rugby and discovered his love for the game. He then took the decision to play rugby professionally.
Career
His plans came to fruition in 2002, when he signed a contract to join the North Harbor rugby union team to commence his professional career. He played with the team for over 14 years, and during this time, he had short spells with other popular teams. He played for the Otago rugby team from 2005 to 2007. In 2006, he featured for the Dunedin-based rugby team, the Highlanders.
Smylie had another long spell with the Hurricanes from 2007 to 2017. The rugby player has also made appearances for other teams, such as Taranaki and Benetton.
The Auckland-born sportsman represented the New Zealand national team in 2002. He has also played for Māori All Blacks and Junior All Blacks. The latter team is the second national Rugby Union team of New Zealand.
