“Somewhere in Afrika” is one of the hits of this English guitarist and the lead vocalist of the band Earth Band. He and his band are best known for their classic “Blinded By the Light”.
Background
Chris Thompson was born in Kent, England but was raised in New Zealand. He had his first band experience in high school in the band The Paragons, which performed at weekly gigs and church events.
Career
Thompson joined the Earth Band in 1976 and helped them record the album “The Roaring Silence”. He left the band just three years later and formed a band called Night. The band had two major hits “If You Remember Me” and “The Champ”. The latter made it to the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Thompson released his debut album “Out of the Night” and has released others, including “Won't Lie Down”, which was released in 2001. He has worked with several bands and artists, including Steve Hackett, Brian May of Queen, and Harold Faltermeyer. With the latter, he co-wrote the theme song, “The Challenge (Face It)”, for the 1989 Wimbledon Tennis Championships.
