About Chris Waddle
Christopher Roland Waddle is the talented former English football manager and player. His professional playing career spanned from 1978 to 1998. He was a winger/attacking midfielder for several English Premier League clubs. He played for England in the 1986 FIFA World Cup, the UEFA Euro 1988, and the 1990 FIFA World Cup.
Family and Background
Born in Felling, Gateshead in England, he enjoyed playing football as a kid but nearly gave up on his dream when he went to work in a food processing factory.
He got married to Lorna E. Bruce and they share two children together.
Career
Chris began his career at Newcastle United in the 1980s before moving on to Tottenham Hotspur in 1985. He stayed at Tottenham for four years. He then moved to French club Olympique de Marseille for a fee of £4.25 million. He played for the French side from 1989 to 1992. The winger then went on to play for a number of lower-level clubs until his retirement.
He was capped 62 times for England between 1985 and 1991. He was also a member of the English side that made it to the quarter-finals of the 1986 FIFA World Cup and the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup.
Post retirement, he has worked with BBC Radio Five Live as an analyst of their Premier League and Champions League fixtures.
Notable Achievements
During his stay (from 1989 to 1992) at French club Marseille, fans dubbed him "Magic Chris”. He won 3 French League titles with Marseille in the late 80s and early 90s.
With the London football club Tottenham Hotspur, Waddle and his teammates were FA Cup runners-up in the 1992-93 season.
In 1988, he was crowned “Tottenham Hotspur Player of the Year”.
