About Christiaan Huygens
Considered amongst the all-time greatest scientists and a major influence on the Scientific Revolution, Christiaan Huygens was a Dutch mathematician, astronomer, physicist and inventor. He is credited as the first person to apply mathematics in the analysis of physical problems and unobservable physical phenomena hence he is regarded as one of the founders of mathematical physics and the world’s first theoretical physicist.
He invented the pendulum clock, aerial telescope and balance spring. He also discovered Titan (the Saturn moon) and derived the formula for centrifugal force and centripetal force.
Family Life
His father, Constantijn was a poet, composer and diplomat while his mother, Suzanna van Baerle became popular through a poem she collaborated on with Constantijn.
He had four siblings. His elder brother Constantijn Jr. also became a statesman and poet like his father and his younger brother, Lodewijk became a diplomat. He was never married.
Death
He died on July 8, 1695 in The Hague, Netherlands at the age of 66.
