Cindy McCain (nee Hensley) is an American business executive, humanitarian, and diplomat. She was famously married to the late former US senator and two-time Republican presidential candidate John McCain.
Early Childhood and Education
McCain was the only child of John and Marguerite Hensley, although she had half-siblings from her parents' previous marriages. Her father was a wealthy beer distributor. She became a special education teacher after she received her bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Southern California.

The Arizona native met her husband John McCain while vacationing in Hawaii, and the pair wed a year later.
Career Highlights
Cindy McCain also served as vice president and director of her father's company, Hensley & Co, taking over as chairman when he passed away. In 2021, she was appointed by President Joe Biden as ambassador to the United Nations Agencies for Food & Agriculture.
Charity Work
In 1988, she branched into humanitarianism and founded the American Voluntary Medical Team (AVMT), a non-profit organization providing medical aid to war-torn countries.
Controversies
McCain suffered from prescription painkiller addiction in the late 1980s. In 1994, she publicly admitted to stealing medication from AVMT. Through an agreement with prosecutors, she avoided jail time, and her organization ceased operations in 1995.
Awards
In 2019, she was inducted into the Arizona Women's Hall of Fame. She also received the heritage award from the Arizona Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
