About Cisco Houston
Cisco Houston managed to establish himself in the music industry as a folk singer. What made him unique from other folk singers was his smooth and sweet voice which a lot of his listeners thought was too good for producing folk music.
Personal life
He was the son of Adrian Moncure Houston. He was born as Gilbert Vandine Houstone but was known by his stage name Cisco Houston. Houston was known to be a very brilliant boy during his school days but couldn’t further his education due to challenges with his sight.
Career Highlight
His music career began during The Great Depression period but he got his big break after the Second World War. Houston participated in the Second World War and served at the National Maritime Union.
After the war, he held performances in churches and colleges. He performed with the folk music ensemble The Almanac Singers and other singers like Lead Belly and Sonny Terry.
Aside from organizing performances, he released his own folk music including “900 Miles and Other R. R. Songs”, “Cisco Houston Sing Songs of the Open Road”, “I Ain’t Got No Home” and “Passing Through”.
Throughout his music career, he had a very close relationship with the former American singer Woody Guthrie.
Death
Cisco Houston died in 1961 as a result of an incurable stomach cancer. Several folk musicians were saddened by his death, with singers, Tom Paxton, Peter La Farge, Bob Dylan and Andy Irvine releasing tributes for him.
Trivia
He was featured in the theatre play, “The Cradle Will Rock”.
