About Clara Zetkin
Clara Zetkin was a famous German women’s right activist and politician who served in the prestigious Reichstag between 1920 and 1933. She began her political career as a member of the Social Democratic Party, but switched to the Independent Social Democratic Party of Germany in 1917. Three years later, she joined the Communist Party of Germany through which she had the opportunity to serve in the house.
As an activist
Throughout her career, Zetkin fought for the rights of women, especially in politics. Her other vision was to move women from homes to work places in order to have a say in the decision-making process of trade unions.
While with the Social Democratic Party, she helped form the "Women's Office". It was aimed at addressing the social needs of women in the party. She played a huge part in the establishment of the “International Women's Day” in 1911.
Family and Education
Her maiden name was Clara Josephine Eissner and was born to Josephine Vitale and Gottfried Eissner. She was married to Ossip Zetkin and together they had two kids named Maxim Zetkin and Konstantin Zetkin.
She attended Leipzig Teachers’ College for Women.
Recognitions
In 1927, she was honored with the Order of the Red Banner. Five years later, she received the Order of Lenin accolade.
Trivia
She fled to the Soviet Union in 1933 to escape the Adolf Hitler-led administration.
A German national award (the Clara Zetkin Medal) was named after her in 1954.
The German Democratic Republic used her picture on one of their postal stamps in 1987.
