About Clarence Brown
Clarence Brown joined the film industry after participating in the First World War with the U.S. Army Air Service. As a director, he made his debut in 1920 in the film “The Great Redeemer”. Throughout his career in the film industry which spanned over three decades, Brown worked on many films such as 1925’s “The Goose Woman” and “Wonder of Women” which featured actors like Lewis Stone and Peggy Wood.
Family
He was raised by his parents Katherine Ann Brown Gaw and Larkin Harry Brown, who manufactured cotton. The filmmaker was in four different marriages. His first marriage was to Paula Herndon Pratt. Until his death he was married to Marian Spies. His much-publicized marriage to actress Alice Joyce lasted for over a decade.
Education
He attended the University of Tennessee after graduating from Knoxville High School.
Recognitions
In 1960, he was honored on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Trivia
His six nominations for the Academy Awards’ “Best Director” made him the most nominated person for that prize without winning.
