About Claude Chabrol
One of France's best film producers, Claude Chabrol, was a master of thrillers whose trademark was a distinguished method characterized by dispassionate objectivity.
Early Life
Chabrol was raised in Sardent, France. He was expected to carry on the family pharmacy business. Both his father and grandfather were pharmacists. Between the ages of 12 and 14, Chabrol managed a movie club. This experience sparked his interest in thrillers, detective fiction, and other popular literature.
Early Career
He went to the University of Paris' School of Political Science and was a sergeant in the French Medical Corps, where he worked as a film projector then joined his friends as a staff writer for Cahiers du Cinéma.
He wrote for Arts magazine and his most famous articles were "Little Themes” and "The Evolution of Detective Films".
Filming Career
In December 1957, Chabrol spent three months shooting his feature directorial debut “Le Beau Serge”. The film was important to the New Wave (Nouvelle Vague), a widely diversified experimental movement in French films.
Chabrol was the most prolific of the important New Wave filmmakers, releasing roughly one movie annually from 1958 until his death.
