About Claude Lévi-Strauss
Claude Lévi-Strauss was a popular French anthropologist who in his 1955 book titled “Tristes Tropiques” argued that the characteristics of humans were similar everywhere. His ideas and arguments were fundamental in the development of academic fields such as structural anthropology, and structuralism.
In order to spread his ideas, Lévi-Strauss published many books which included “Myth and Meaning” and “The Way of the Masks”.
Family
He spent his early years with his grandfather, a rabbi. His 1932 marriage to French ethnologist Dina Dreyfus ended in divorce. He was married to Rose Marie Ullmo from 1946 to 1954 before tying the knot with Monique Roman. He was survived by two sons named Laurent, and Matthieu.
Education
He had his education at Lycée Janson de Sailly before moving to Lycée Condorcet. He later studied at the University of Paris.
Honors
Lévi-Strauss received lots of accolades which included the Grand Cross of the National Order of the Legion of Honour, and Japan’s Grand cross of the Order of the Rising Sun.
Trivia
Renowned philosophers like Jacques Derrida, and Catherine Clément have cited him as their influences.
He also taught at the University of São Paulo.
