About Claude Pepper
Regarded by many as the people’s advocate, the American Democratic politician dedicated five decades of his life to public service. He was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 1928 and served till 1931. He then went on to spend the next four decades as a law maker on Capitol Hill.
Education & Law Practice
A product of the University of Alabama and the Harvard University Law School. Prior to his election to the Florida legislature in 1929, he taught and practised general law in Perry and Florida. He is originally from Alabama.
Notable Achievements
When Florida Senator Duncan Fletcher died in 1936, Claude Pepper was elected as his replacement. He soon ascended to become the leader of the New Dealers in Congress; and as a Democrat Senator, succeeded in spearheading the fight to pass the Lend-Lease Act. He also led in the passage of bills that supported National Health Care, equity in the pay of men and women workers, minimum wage and the creation of Social Security. After he was defeated in his desire to be re-elected for a third full term in the Senate, he resumed his law practice.
Personal Life
He got acquainted with his wife-to-be, Mildred Webster, during his work at the State Capitol in 1931. He married her in 1936.
Recognition
He became a recipient of the Roosevelt Institute’s Four Freedoms medal in 1985.
Death
The veteran lawmaker died from stomach cancer.
