About Claudio Abbado
The Grammy Award winner, Claudio Abbado was an Italian conductor who made a mark by serving as a music conductor of the La Scala opera house and principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. He was also the founder and director of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and Mahler Chamber Orchestra.
Early Life
The conductor was the son of Michelangelo Abbado and Maria Carmela Savagnone. The conductor went on to study piano, composition and conducting at the Milan Conservatory and graduated in 1955.
Career
Abbado made his debut as a conductor in 1958 and later won the international Serge Koussevitzky Competition for conductors that year. He conducted his first opera, The Love for Three Oranges, in 1959 and also made his La Scala conducting debut in 1960. Abbado later made his British debut with the Hallé Orchestra in 1965. The conductor continued to perform in high-profile shows and was the musical and artistic director of the Orchestra Mozart from 2003 until his death.
Personal Life
Abbado first married Giovanna Cavazzoni Abbado in 1956 and later dissolved the marriage and remarried Gabriella Cantalupi. The conductor died of stomach cancer in 2014 and was survived by 5 children.
Awards
He received the Mahler Medal in 1985 and also the Wolff Prize in Arts in 2008.
