About Clayton Anderson
Clayton “Astro Clay” Anderson, a retired astronaut, spent 152 days on the International Space Station as a member of the ISS Expedition 15 crew. The six spacewalks he completed over his 167 days in space took 38 hours and 28 minutes. He worked for NASA for 30 years, the first 15 as an engineer and the last 15 as an astronaut.
Education
He graduated cum laude from Iowa State University and later with a master's degree in aerospace engineering (1983).
NASA
In 1983, he started working for the Johnson Space Center, where he performed rendezvous and proximity operations trajectory designs for early space shuttle and International Space Station missions. He was appointed the Flight Design Branch's Chief in 1993. He served as manager of the NASA JSC's Emergency Operations Center from 1996 until his nomination. He was chosen by NASA in 1998 to become a mission specialist.
During STS-131's April 2010 launch, he served as a mission specialist. In 2013, he left NASA.
His works as an author include "A is for Astronaut: Blasting Through the Alphabet" and the young-adult novel "Letters from Space" (2020). He assumed leadership of the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum in May 2022.
