About Cliff Arquette
The Ohio native and former comic actor was custom-made for the big screen. He was best known for appearing in dozens of TV shows as the comical “Charley Weaver”. He also featured on popular shows such as “Hollywood Squares” and “The Dennis Day Show.” He died of a heart attack on September 23, 1974, aged 68.
Family
He was born in Toledo, Ohio and was the last of 4 children. He had a good ear for music and taught himself to play several instruments.
Career
In the 1930s, he made his debut on a radio show with Fred Astaire and Charlie Butterworth where he mimicked old people. He appeared on other radio shows such as “Hollywood Mardi Gras,” ‘Candid. Lady” and “Glamour Manor.”
He later landed some gigs on the “Fibber McGee and Molly” program, where he played the character of “Oldtimer.” He retired in 1955 and turned to wood carving.
Awards
He was a nominee for The Michael Powell Award for “Best British Feature Film” in 2014
Trivia
He dropped out of high school and started a band named Cliff Arquette and his Purple Derbies.
