About Coleman Hawkins
Labeled as the first main saxophonist in jazz history, Coleman Randolph Hawkins was an American-born musician most notable for his skillful playing of the saxophone.
His Beginnings
He grew up as the secondborn of his parents although he lost his older sister when she was only 2 years old.
The talented saxophone genius attended Topeka High School in Kansas after the family moved from Chicago. While still in high school, Hawkins attended classes to study harmony and composition at Washburn College in Kansas.
Jazz Career
His love for music, specifically jazz, led him to become a professional musician during his teens. Considered to be one of the greatest icons in the world of Jazz, Hawkins’ rise to fame began when he started working with Jazz Hounds in 1921 with Mamie Smith.
After a year with the Jazz Hounds, he moved on to work with Fletcher Henderson’s orchestra group. His artistic touch on music and musical instruments grew in the years he spent playing with the band. He stayed with the orchestra for more than a decade.
Contribution to Modern Jazz
Hawkins as a professional musician was very keen and particular in identifying different talents and styles and helped harness those skills in adding some twist to Jazz music.
In 1944, he was generally considered the leading force in debuting bebop recording sessions which included some works with Dizzy Gillespie, Clyde Hart, and many more Jazz artists.
Death
Coleman Hawkins died on May 19, 1969. He was 63 years old.
