About Cootie Williams
The Alabama-born jazz and R&B musician was best known for his skill in playing the trumpet. He gained public recognition when he joined the orchestra of American jazz composer Duke Ellington when they played at the Cotton Club. He performed with the band from 1929 – 1940.
Music Career
William’s first music recording was a collaboration with pianist James P. Johnson in New York in 1928. After playing in Duke Ellington’s orchestra for more than ten years, he became a member of American bandleader Benny Goodman’s orchestra in 1940.
The following year, the musician created his own music group and worked with fellow musicians Eddie Vinson, Charlie Parker and Bud Powell. The band started to decline by the late 1940s and eventually split.
He created another jazz band during the late 1950s and collaborated with jazz player Rex Stewart on several collections including “Cootie Williams in Hi-Fi”, recorded in 1958 under RCA Records. He also released the album “The Solid Trumpet of Cootie Williams” on Moodsville Records in 1962. The album was produced by Sid Wayman.
