Early Life
She majored in education theory at the University of Hamburg. Her own short stories were inspired by the kinds of tales that appealed to the underprivileged kids she worked with during her three years as a social worker.
Career
The fictional “Gespensterjäger” and “Wilde Hühner” line of books are two of her early children's series. She gained wider recognition once her novels started being translated into English in 2002.
The novels ”The Thief Lord”, “Dragon Rider”, and “Inkheart” were made into movies and spent more than a year on The New York Times Best Seller list.
Awards and Honors received by Funke
In 2020, the German Youth Literature Awards bestowed upon her the Special Award For Lifetime Achievement.
She was awarded the Roswitha Prize in 2008.
For her children’s novel “Dragon Rider”, she received the Kalbacher Klapperschlange, a German children’s literary prize.
Spouse and children
In 1979, she took her wedding vows with Rolf Frahm, with whom she has two children – Ben and Anna.
