About Cornelio Saavedra
Cornelio Saavedra, full name Cornelio Judas Tadeo de Saavedra y Rodriguez, was a preeminent figure in the history of Argentinian politics. He was an influential statesman and military officer remembered for his significant influence on the “May Revolution,” which set the pace for Argentina’s independence and freedom from Spain.
Early Life & Education
He was born in Otuyo, Viceroyalty of Peru (currently Bolivia). In 1767, Saavedra and his family immigrated to Buenos Aires. As a result, he was educated at the prestigious “Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires,” where he studied Latin Grammar and philosophy.
Political & Military Career Highlights
He was one of the most strategic leaders in support of establishing the Junta government. He rose to political prominence after being appointed as the “Regiment of Patrician’s” first commanding officer.
His strategies during the “May Revolution” were highly successful, and he was later chosen as the leader of the “Primera Junta,” which established the Argentinian government.
However, after the defeat of the earliest Upper Peru campaign, he left the presidency and moved to command the “Army of the North.” As a result, his political rivals took advantage of his absence, creating the “First Triumvirate” and ordering Saavedra’s arrest. Sadly, he lived in exile until all his charges were withdrawn in 1818.
