About Cornelius Castoriadis
Cornelius Castoriadis was a brilliant 20th-century philosopher, psychoanalyst, economist, and social critic. Castoriadis is remembered for his profound writings on social institutions and autonomy governance and for co-founding the "Socialisme ou Barbarie" group.
Background & Education
He was of Greek and French descent but was born in Constantinople, Ottoman Empire (now Istanbul, Turkey). However, he grew up in Athens, Greece.
In 1937, at age 15, he graduated from the "8th Gymnasium of Athens." In addition, he held a bachelor's degree in political science, economics, and law from the University of Athens.
Career Highlights
He joined the Trotskyist Parti Communiste Internationalist (PCI) in the early 1940s. However, in 1948, he notably became disenchanted with "Trotskyism," eventually leading him to break away and co-found the libertarian socialist group "Socialisme ou Barbarie."
Between 1948 and 1970, he was employed as an economist at OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development). Castoriadis' views on "Marxism" were informed by his job as an economist. However, he was anti-Soviet despite being an avid Marxist. He perceived the USSR as a bureaucratic instead of a communist state.
He notably cautioned against the perilous political and ethical effects of a modern culture that would completely overlook autonomy and the necessity of establishing boundaries or laws for power.
“L'institution imaginaire de la société (1975)” is his best-known work.
