About Count Basie
Count Basie was the stage name of William James Basie, an American jazz pianist, bandleader, organist and composer. Having toured with a variety of acts in his twenties as a pianist, he formed his band, the Count Basie Orchestra in 1935. For close to 50 years, he led, recorded and performed with the band. He released albums such as “Count Basie Presents Eddie Davis Trio + Joe Newman”, “Basie Jam” and “For the Second Time”.
Family Life
His parents’ names were Lillian and Harvey Lee Basie. He was first married to Vivian Lee Winn, whom he divorced after barely 5 years. He had a daughter, Diane with his second wife, Catherine Morgan.
Achievements
He was the recipient of nine Grammy Awards. He is also an inductee of the Blues Hall of Fame and New Jersey Hall of Fame.
Death
He died on 26th April 1984 at the age of 79 from pancreatic cancer.
