Cynthia Erivo is an English actress, singer and songwriter who has received accolades for her work on both stage and screen. She made her debut in 2011 as Madeleine in the stage musical “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg”.
Four years later, she debuted on-screen through a guest appearance in the British television series “Chewing Gum”. She has since become known best for her portrayal of Celie Harris Johnson in the Broadway musical “The Color Purple” (2015-2017) and Harriet Tubman in the 2019 biographical film “Harriet”.

She is the daughter of Nigerian immigrants to England. She grew up in Stockwell, London. The actress was trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She has dated British actor Dean John-Wilson.
