About Dag Hammarskjöld
Dag Hammarskjöld was a renowned Swedish economist who was rather known for his work with the United Nations as its Secretary-General from 1953 to 1961. He first started as the secretary of his country’s central bank called Riksbank. He was later appointed as the bank’s General Council chairman in 1941, and served in that position for seven years. He also represented his country at the Organization for European Economic Cooperation.
With the United Nations
Hammarskjöld was first appointed the deputy chairman for Sweden’s team to the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1951. Two years later, he was appointed the Secretary-General of the organization, taking over from Norwegian politician Trygve Lie.
During his tenure, he focused on strengthening the structures of the body. He would be remembered for his roles in resolving international conflicts, and setting up peacekeeping forces to help settle the crisis in the Congo and Egypt.
Family
He was from a very influential family in his native country. He was one of the children of Swedish politician Hjalmar Hammarskjöld and his wife Agnes Hammarskjöld. He had three older siblings.
Education
He had his tertiary education at Uppsala University, and Stockholm University. Before that, he studied at Katedralskolan.
Honors
He was posthumously awarded the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize.
Death
He died on the spot after a plane he was onboard crashed near Northern Rhodesia. He was on his way to ensure peace between the UN and soldiers of the Katanga State.
Trivia
He was the youngest person to serve as the Secretary-General of the UN as of October 2021.
He was described by former United States President John F. Kennedy as the “greatest statesman”.
