About Dale Gardner
NASA astronaut Dale Allan Gardner also doubled as a naval flight officer during his years of active service. He made his name known in the mid-1980s for flying two Space Shuttle missions.
Early Life
The astronaut was raised by his mother, Alice Gardner. He graduated from the Savanna Community High School and later became a product of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1970.
Career
Gardner joined the United States Navy right after graduating from the university. He began Basic Naval Flight Officer training in 1970 and was awarded his Naval Flight Officer wings in 1971. In 1978, NASA found him to be a promising candidate for space missions and enrolled him into space training a year later. Gardner was part of the 8th space shuttle mission in 1983 and was also on board the 14th flight of the Shuttle program the following year.
Personal Life
The astronaut was married to Sherry Gardener till 2014, when he passed away.
Death
The naval flight officer died of a hemorrhagic stroke.
Achievements
For his perseverance and dedication, Gardner has been decorated with the Defense Superior Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, and Lloyd's of London Meritorious Service Medal.
