About Dale Murphy
A phenomenal former baseball player from the mid-1970s to the early 1990s, Dale Bryan Murphy is mostly known for his years playing for the Atlanta Braves for over a decade. In 1982, Murphy was awarded the first MVP award by a Brave, and that same year, he also won his very first Gold Gloves Award. He went on to win four more Gold Gloves Awards consecutively.
Early Life and Career
He was born to Charles Murphy, his father, and Betty Murphy, his mother. His parents had two children: himself and his little sister, Sue Murphy. Murphy graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School while playing for the American Legion at a young age.
His professional career began with the Atlanta Braves in 1976 as a catcher. He later advanced to playing as an average first baseman, increasingly becoming better in due time.
Professional Career Development
He became a significant power player when he later in 1980, changed positions to playing outfield. He was widely successful and effective when he switched to playing center field.
By the early years of 1980, Murphy’s position as an outfielder had made him into one of the best players among the Atlanta Braves. During the 1982 baseball season, he played over 160 games.
After spending 14 years playing for the Braves, the Oregon-born moved to play for the Philadelphia Phillies from 1990 to 1992, and then for the Colorado Rockies in 1993.
Accomplishments
While with the Atlanta Braves, he partook in the MLB All-Star games seven times.
The 1980s saw Murphy win the Gold Glove Award five times. The coveted honor is given to baseball players that have distinguished themselves brilliantly on the field of play.
Dale Murphy won the Silver Slugger Award four times.
In honor of his contribution to the Braves, his jersey number 3 was retired by the team in 1994.
He has been inducted into a number of halls of fame, including the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 1997; the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame; and the Braves Hall of Fame.
Personal Life
Murphy got married to Nancy, and together the couple has eight children, including seven sons and a daughter.
Children
Shawn Murphy, an American former football guard who played for Miami Dolphins, and Jake Murphy, also a former football tight end with the Oakland Raiders are among the sons of Dales Murphy, following their father in his athletic achievements.
