About Dan Rooney
Aside from his work as a diplomat, Dan Rooney was famously known for his time with National Football League side Pittsburgh Steelers. A descendant of the founder of the football team, Rooney was named as the team’s general manager in 1969. He later served as the team’s president before becoming the owner in 1988. His successful time with the franchise enabled them to win the Super Bowl six times.
As a diplomat
Due to his love for Irish-American charitable programs, Rooney was nominated for the United States’ Ambassador to Ireland position by President Barack Obama in 2009. He was sworn into office later that year and served in that position until 2012.
Family
His dad, Art Rooney, was the founder of the Steelers. He also spent his childhood with his mother named Kathleen McNulty. He was married to Patricia Regan and had nine children including Art Rooney II who would succeed him as the owner of the Steelers.
Education
He played football during his time at North Catholic High School. He later joined Duquesne University.
Awards
Rooney was inducted into the famous Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000. He’s a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Honor. He was a recipient of the Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire medal in 2008.
Facts
He established the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature to honor Irish writers who are below the age of 40.
He initiated the "Rooney Rule" which demands that all NFL teams must consider at least a person from the minority side for their vacant general manager or coaching role during their process of hiring.
