Dana Fuchs was hailed as the new Janis Joplin even before she was cast as the renowned rock star in an off-Broadway musical. The blues-rock singer/songwriter has had a multifaceted career, encompassing music, theater, and film.
Early Life
She had a rough childhood, took illegal drugs, dropped out of school, and became a stripper, but after the tragic demise of her siblings, she was able to turn her life around. Her music began to incorporate her personal experience with death and loss.
Career
Her admiration for Esther Phillips and Etta James led her to focus on composition and singing in 1998. She played in blues clubs; and once she and Jon Diamond connected, they started the Dana Fuchs Band and put out the album “Lonely for a Lifetime” in 2003.
In 2007, she featured in "Across the Universe". The drama film, which was directed by Julie Taymor, received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Picture.
