About Daniel Chester French
Daniel Chester French was a bronze, marble statue and monument sculptor known for his seated marble statue of Abraham Lincoln (1920) at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. His work is arguably more well-known to American audiences than that of any other sculptor of the early 20th century.
Career
The statue; The Minute Man (1875) was his first significant commission from the town of Concord in Massachusetts.
In Paris, he erected a monument of George Washington (1900) and Columbia University's Alma Mater statue (1900–03) in New York City
Early Life
His parents, Henry Flagg French and Anne Richardson, had him in Exeter, New Hampshire. His schooling included studies in anatomy with William Rimmer and drawing with William Morris Hunt. He studied clay modeling at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also had some years of training in Thomas Ball's workshop.
Death
He was interred in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord after he died in 1931.
