Ace tennis player Daniel Nestor of Serbian birth became a big name in Canadian professional tennis circles in 1991. Nestor famously bagged an Olympic gold medal at the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney.
Early Years
Though Nestor was born in Serbia, his parents relocated to Canada when he was only four. His talent for tennis was discovered early and he was enrolled in the Academic Program for Gifted Athletes (APGA) in high school, where he honed his skills to professional-level quality.
He married Natasha Gavrilovic in 2005. As of 2021, they couple have two daughters – Tiana Alexis and Bianca Willow.
Tennis Career
The talented sportsman first made his mark when he beat the world champion at the time, Stefan Edberg, in a singles match. He has since played against some of the biggest names in lawn tennis.
Nestor is credited with partaking in one of the longest Wimbledon matches in known history – it lasted over 6 hours.
The tennis star retired from professional tennis in 2018. In a career that spanned almost two decades, the Canadian won 91 men’s double titles, playing with various partners.
Awards
The accomplished tennis player won the Tennis Canada Male Player of the Year Award 10 times in the span of his 28-year career. He won the gold medal in the Sydney Olympics men’s doubles in 2000 with his partner, Sébastien Lareau.
In 2010, he was honoured with the Order of Canada, the second-highest honor for merit in Canada.
Trivia
The tennis legend received an honorary doctorate from York University in 2012.
