About Daniel Patrick Moynihan
Daniel Patrick Moynihan’s first political appointment was under Averell Harriman who served as the Governor of New York during the 1950s. In 1961, he was appointed as the United States’ Assistant Secretary of Labor.
Affiliated to the Democratic Party, Moynihan served as the Advisor to the President from 1969 to 1970 during the Richard Nixon-led administration. He held a number of ambassadorial positions before he was elected into the United States Senate in 1977 and served in that position until 2001. He would be known for the Moynihan Report which was published in 1965.
Family
He was the son of John Henry Moynihan and Margaret Ann Phipps. He got married to Elizabeth Brennan in 1955 and they share three children named John, Tim, and Maura.
Education
After completing Benjamin Franklin High School, he attended Tufts University. He also studied at London School of Economics.
Honors
The National Building Museum celebrated him with the Honor Award in 1989. He was also a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the Heinz Award.
