About Darren McGavin
Darren McGavin was the professional alias of American actor William Lyle Richardson. He dropped out of his architecture studies at the University of the Pacific and started working as a movie studio painter in 1945. He landed his first film role that same year after a spot became vacant on the set of “A Song to Remember”.
McGavin started stage acting in 1949 by joining a tour of “Death of a Salesman”. He followed it up with his Broadway debut in 1954. The actor is also known for his prominent television career, having appeared in “Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer”, “Riverboat” and “The Outsider” among many others.
Family Life
He was born as an only child to Grace Bogart and Reed D. Richardson. His first marriage to Anita Marie Williams, in 1942, ended in a divorce the following year. He remarried in 1944 to Melanie York. They had four children and divorced in 1969. That same year, he married actress Kathie Browne and they stayed together until her death in 2003.
Death
He died at 83 of cardiovascular disease in February 2006.
