Early Life, Education & Career
He has an AB degree and an MA degree from Muhlenberg College and Cornell University, respectively. Between 1959 and 1962, he worked as an English teacher in various high schools in Owego, New York. However, he entered the US Navy in 1962, serving until 1965, and was aboard the “USS Intrepid” and “USS Monrovia.”
He continued to teach English and became a social worker in California in the late 1960s.
Writing Career
Ponicsan drew inspiration from his experiences in the US Navy to write his first novel, “The last Detail,” in 1970. It was adapted into the 1973 film “The Last Detail,” which featured veteran actor Jack Nicholson.
He has enjoyed a long and successful career as a screenwriter, penning screenplays for films such as “A Girl Called Hatter Fox” by CBS, “The Enemy Within” by HBO, and School Ties.
He has received various screenwriter awards and nominations from the Golden Globe, Edgar Awards, WGA Awards, and NAACP Image Awards.
