Playing Career
He began his career with the Baltimore Orioles with whom he won several accolades and gained a lot of recognition. Subsequently, he went on to play for other successful clubs including the Philadelphia Phillies, Atlanta Braves, Yomiuri Giants, and Chicago Cubs.
Coaching Career
At the end of his playing days, he began a new career as a manager, overseeing clubs such as the New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds, Baltimore Orioles, and Los Angeles Dodgers.

He has been married to Susan Allen Johnson. Their marriage took place in 1994.
