About David Gates
David Gates was one of America’s most popular musicians during the 1970s as a member of the now-defunct Bread band. As one of their lead singers, he helped them to record a number of albums including their self-titled maiden album.
Solo career
Since departing from the group in 1973, Gates has embarked on a successful solo career. Later that year, he released his debut studio album entitled “First”. His 1978 single "Goodbye Girl" peaked at number three on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart. In 1994, he recorded his last album entitled “Love Is Always Seventeen” before announcing his retirement in 2007.
He has also gained fame as a songwriter. He’s best known for writing the lyrics of the 1963 songs "Popsicles and Icicles" which was originally released by the American group The Murmaids. He has also worked with some popular performers like Merle Haggard, and Elvis Presley.
Family
His mother Wanda Rollins was a piano instructor while his father, Clarence, directed a local band. He has been married to a lady called Jo-Rita Gates.
Education
He attended Will Rogers High School before moving to the University of Oklahoma to read law.
Recognitions
As a member of the Bread music group, he has been selected into the famous Vocal Group Hall of Fame.
