David L. Lawrence, in full David Leo Lawrence, was a revered American Democratic politician. He was the first person to serve as the mayor of Pittsburgh and governor of Pennsylvania. In addition, he was also the first Roman Catholic to be elected as governor in America.
Early Life
The politician was of Irish descent and was born in Golden Triangle, a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Due to poor financial support, he was not able to attend college. However, he worked as the clerk of Pittsburgh lawyer William Brennan for several years and later began an insurance business.
During World War I, Lawrence was an officer of the US Army in the office of the adjutant general in Washington, DC.
Major Political Career Highlights
He was elected to chair the “Allegheny County Democratic Party” in 1919.
He was the 51st Mayor of Pittsburgh, serving four terms between 1946 and 1959. Afterward, he became Pennsylvania’s 37th governor, serving from January 20, 1959, to January 15, 1963.
He was notable for his instrumental role in the presidential nominations of John F. Kennedy and Franklin Delano Roosevelt and was often referred to as the “maker of American presidents.”
Death
He died from a heart attack in 1966, aged 77. However, his death was ascribed to the lack of resuscitation equipment in ambulances at the time.
