David Anthony Laws was born on 30 November 1965 to a Conservative-voting father and a Labour Party mother. Regarded as an orator from his teens, he competed in and won several debating competitions. He went on to earn a degree in Economics from King's College, Cambridge, and by 1987, he was already a Vice President at JP Morgan Chase, a behemoth in the global financial sector.
Life in Politics
In 2001, Laws was elected to parliament to represent Yeovil. Based on his experience in finance he was appointed his party's treasury spokesman the following year and became Chief Secretary to the Treasury on May 13, 2010. He was forced to resign after 17 days in office based on misappropriation of funds allegations and was subsequently suspended from the House of Commons for seven days. Laws returned to cabinet as Minister of State for Schools in 2012 and served until 2015.
David Laws was part of a four-man team that negotiated a coalition deal with the Conservative Party in May, 2010.
In the period that he was Minister of State for Schools, he also served as the Minister of State for the Cabinet Office.
