Santa Monica, California, is his birthplace. Ossman wrote and published his earliest works while schooling at Manual Arts High School. He briefly studied at Pomona College and graduated from Columbia University's "School of Dramatic Arts" in 1958.

He entered radio broadcasting in 1959 after joining "WBAI-FM". The University of Toledo and Corinth Books have documented his radio interviews with poets between 1960 and 1961.
Ossman co-founded the popular American comedy troupe "Firesign" in the mid-1960s. He contributed to the group's successful comedy albums and play collections for two decades and was notable for his roles in "Nick Danger" and "Don't Crush That Dwarf".
