About Dawn Powell
Dawn Powell was a celebrated American author who published over a hundred short stories, twelve novels and ten plays throughout her career which spanned for over three decades. In 1925, she published her first novel which was titled “Whither”.
Among her numerous works were 1940’s novel “Angels on Toast” and “The Golden Spur”, a novel which was published in 1962.
Family
She lost her mum when she was seven years old. In 1920, she became the wife of copy-writer Joseph Gousha. The following year they had a son named Joseph R. Gousha Jr.
Honors
She won an American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1964. A year before that, she was nominated for a National Book Award. In 2015, she was inducted into the famous New York State Writers Hall of Fame.
Death
She was diagnosed with colon cancer which caused her death in 1965.
Trivia
The 1993 film “Hello, Sister!” was based on her play entitled “Walking Down Broadway”.
She worked under renowned editor Maxwell Perkins.
