About Dean Jagger
Dean Jagger played the role of Elvis Presley’s father in the movie “King Creole”, a 1958 musical drama that was directed by Michael Curtiz.
Family Life and Education
Growing up, the Ohio-born actor was anything but fond of school. He dropped out of school many times then decided to go to Wabash College. He again dropped out of college in his second year. He enrolled at the Conservatory of Drama.
Career highlight
He taught in a school for a while before venturing into acting. His first Broadway debut came in 1925 where he played a minor role in a George M. Cohan production. Three years later, he performed in a play titled “Remote Control”.
Jagger’s first film was in the 1929 film “The Woman from Hell”, in which was cast as Jim Coakley and starred alongside the American actress Mary Astor and Roy D’Arcy.
In 1933, he acted as the lead role in the movie “Tobacco Road'', which paved the way for the growth of his career.
He was associated with artists like Lee Tracy, Jack Oakie, Jackie Coogan, and Charlie Ruggles. He also starred in notable movies like “Brigham Young” “Mr. Novak”, “Pepper”, and “Under Cover of Night”.
Achievements
He received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. The award came for his performance as a World War I veteran in the 1949 film “Twelve O’Clock High” which was directed by Henry King.
For his performance in the TV series “Mr. Novak”, he was nominated for an Emmy Award.
He earned a Daytime Emmy award for his role in the American Christian TV series “This Is the Life”.
Marriage
In 1947, he took his wedding vows with Gloria Ling. Due to discriminatory laws that existed in California at the time, the couple could not get a marriage license in the state. Therefore, they had to move all the way to New Mexico to obtain their marriage license.
He married three times. His last marriage was to Etta.
Death
He died in his sleep and was survived by his children and daughter.
