Debbie is an American actress who made her debut in 1970 on Broadway. She made her first TV appearance three years later.
She rose to fame after appearing on the musical drama television series, "Fame" where she portrayed teacher Lydia Grant which earned her a Golden Globe.
She directed numerous TV shows between the 2000s and 2010s. Some of these television programs include "Girlfriend" (2008), "Everybody Hates Chris" (2006-2009), and "Jane the Virgin" (2016).
Aside from being an actress, Debbie is also known to be a dancer, choreographer, songwriter and producer.
Family Life
Her father, Andrew Allen worked as an Orthodontist, while her mother, Vivian Allen was a poet, playwright and publisher. She is the sister of Phylicia Rashād, Hugh and Andrew Arthur Allen Jr.
She was married to Winnfred Wilford but divorced in 1983. Debbie later got married to Norm Nixon in 1984. Her children include Vivian, Norman and Devanghn Nixon.
Achievements
At the Primetime Emmy Awards, her performance in "Motown 30: What's Goin' On!" earned her the "Outstanding Achievement in Choreography" in 1991. Her role in "Fame" landed her the same prize in 1982 and 1983.
