About Deodoro da Fonseca
Deodoro da Fonseca became a national figure during his days in the military. While serving in the army, he participated in conflicts like the Paraguayan War, and the 1848 Praieira revolt. In the 1880s, he was elected as Rio Grande do Sul’s governor, which gave him the opportunity to meet other well-known political figures like Ruy Barbosa and Benjamin Constant.
In 1889, he led a coup d'état which resulted in the overthrow of Emperor Pedro II. Fonseca became the first President of what was known as the Federative Republic of Brazil.
Family
He was the son of Rosa Maria and Manuel Mendes Galvão. He also had a brother named Severino Martins da Fonseca. The former military officer was married to Mariana Meireles.
Education
Fonseca was trained at the Praia Vermelha Military School.
Decorations
His service to the country earned him the Order of the Southern Cross.
Cause of Death
He died of dyspnea.
Trivia
Castro Gonzaga, a Brazilian actor, played his character in the 1988 miniseries entitled “Abolição”.
