About Dewitt Wallace
William Roy Dewitt Wallace, an American magazine publisher, co-founded Reader's Digest with his wife Lila Bell Wallace. His peculiar practice of indexing alluded to the journalism revolution he would spearhead, aggregating stories to save readers' time.
Early Years
From 1907 - 1909, he studied at Macalester before transferring to the University of California, Berkeley. While recovering from serious wounds sustained during his time in the American Army, he continued to plan the magazine digest idea.
In 1921, he wed Lila Bell Acheson.
Reader’s Digest
He spent the first six months of his return at the Minneapolis Public Library conducting research and editing magazine pieces. The pair chose to self-publish the magazine and market it via direct mail. On February 5, 1922, the first issue came out. Soon, Reader's Digest was among the most widely read magazines in the entire world.
Honors
He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1972.
